About me

I was born around the same time as when Fischer became a GM. I have lived most of my life in Melbourne, Australia, but have recently moved to Adelaide.

I have had a variety of occupations over the years.

I have 3 children.

Playing experience

I played in my first tournament when I was 12. I won 2 state junior tiles and a national junior title.
I drew against a world champion in a simul when I was 13.

I have played overseas.
I have represented Australia in Malaysia, Yugoslavia, Mexico and China.
In my first game in the US I defeated a grandmaster.

I have extensive tournament experience including winning several state titles in different states.

I have won a national postal championship.

Teaching experience

I have been teaching chess since I was 17. I have taught in many schools and have had numerous private students.
I have taught in person, over the phone, by mail, by email and online.

I have had a chess course published by a correspondence college.

Other experiences

I was an IT trainer for 10 years, teaching adults computer programming. I have the Cert IV in Workplace training and assessment.

I have given numerous lectures at various chess clubs.

I have written chess engines as a hobby and have written some books on computer chess and chess programming.

Best skills

I adjust to the needs of the student and do not go over their heads.

I have had experience with a wide range of students, from many different backgrounds.

Teaching methodology

I can improvise lessons on opening, middlegame and endgame strategy. I can help deepen a student's understanding of tactics.

My most common approach is to go through a student's games, exploring what went well and what could have gone better.
Another approach is to play an online game with the student and then go through it.

Strengths and weaknesses can be identified and ways of overcoming weaknesses can be suggested.
