About me

Not a chess professional in terms of career - I was in media and events, IT/services, and consulting for over 30 years - but have served as Secretary of the Malaysian Chess Federation and have been Executive Director for both the ASEAN Chess Confederation and the Kasparov Chess Foundation Asia-Pacific.

I successfully organised the Kuala Lumpur International Open for ten years and have been an arbiter in over 300 tournaments, half of which was as either the Chief Arbiter or Deputy Chief Arbiter.

Of particular pride was having the opportunity to be the Chief Arbiter for Chess at the ASEAN Para Games held in Singapore in 2015.

Playing experience

I am a former National Junior and National Champion ranked No. 1 in Malaysia for over a decade with a FIDE Rating averaging 2350.

Teaching experience

I have been a coach all my life, as early as 1984 starting the first ever national junior development program where two years later, in 1986, my students won Malaysia’s first ever Asian Championship and only ever individual Olympiad Gold while the national team had its best ever 4th placing in the Asian Team Championships.

With my appointment as Secretary of the FIDE (International Chess Federation) Trainers’ Commission from 2019-2022 my personal coaching took a back seat for four years.

Until then I regularly coached the Malaysian Women Olympiad team and World Youth U-16 Olympiad team as well as the national teams from several other countries including New Zealand at the Baku Olympiad 2016.

Since the 90’s I have helped many young players become IMs, WGMs, and WIMs, with my last individual success being Indonesia’s Samantha Edithso who became World U-10 Cadets Champion in 2018 in both standard chess and rapid chess. (youtu.be/jX_rJy3VCUs).

Other experiences

I have been a prolific writer with chess columns in all three leading Malaysian newspapers for over a decade, have also been a frequent contributor to leading chess websites and blogs and had stints as Features Editor for the American Chess Magazine and been both the Media Officer for the Asian Chess Federation and webmaster for the International Chess Federation.

Best skills

Have always been very successful in developing young talent by providing a sound chess foundation in a relatively short time and then guiding them to playing successes. Usually 1200-1700 and then to 2100 level.

When younger I have worked with students up to 2300 level and helped them achieve title norms and significant tournament victories.
