What is the state of popular music today?

Music and art reflect even what is to come, even in comics published before the 1st moon landing or movies and mostly, music.
when it stand to a halt, I wonder as I never knew such thing before. ( It honestly scare me also)

in edit, I call it some sort of collective consciousness expressed by the few.
Music is a kind of art. So It's hard to tell which state is music is popular.
an answer to this (state of modern music) question can always be "imagine dragons", irrespective of time period

plagiarism or homage? at the moment I am analyzing the 24 prelude and fugue of Shostakovich op87, but Bach also wrote 24 preludes and fugues in all keys in the well-tempered clavier.

Shostakovich admired Bach and wanted to pay homage to him when he reused techniques or elements inherited from Bach. So it is not a copy because there is a different artistic thought and a context of creation which is homage.

maybe Dua Lipa is doing a similar thing by drawing inspiration or making pastiches of songs from the past

One thing has definitely not changed in the music business over the past few decades: the enormous pressure coupled with the constant expectations of the record industry and fans that successful musicians have to deal with. They also have to cope with the huge sums of money that can be earned. They are suddenly superstars and can buy any luxury they want. Many of them are simply overwhelmed by this.

Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, John Bonham, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Chester Bennington, Mac Miller - you and I could go on with this list - all outstanding musicians who, sadly, could no longer cope with the stress and pressure. They died from excessive alcohol consumption, drug and pill abuse or by suicide due to psychological overload.

Demi Lovato also went through a serious crisis during her career. Alcohol and drugs obviously did not provide the hoped-for solution. On the contrary, she was on the brink of the abyss. Several rehab therapies were necessary to bring her back to life.

Her following song really impresses me because it is ruthless and has a high autobiographical element, as you can read in the credits.
