Poor program cannot know if it is due to hardware failure on network connection or people not just playing. And amount games is such that if we assume average game length to be about 5 minutes then about 10 000 would have been disconnected. then separating which ones were genuine timeouts and which ones were due to lost connection can be tedious and may well require manual labor. I can live with 5 rating points lost. I lose them otherwise as well so not a big deal

I think in cases where massive system failures happen, the games that result in timeouts during the system failure should be considered null and void. Sure, there may be genuine timeouts where players intentionally did not want to move, but even if they wanted to move, they couldn't due to the system failure.

If the system failure occurred at 10.00 PM (in whatever timezone), then I think any rated games that were still ongoing by 10.00 PM should be voided as no moves could have taken place regardless of the intention of the players.

Hence, the winning players didn't earn the win, and the losing players didn't deserve to lose.
@for_cryingout_loud They have access now, don't they? It isn't that difficult to run a query and find all games that finished as 'abandoned' or 'not started'.
I think the policy is that points do not get refunded in this manner.

Anyway, play two or three games and you'll be back where you should be
I don't think there is a good solution for this.

I totally see the frustration about a game you lose without actively participating. But at the same time, cancelling all games (which is technically not easy to do right at all in case of server issues), would pose similar questions, like "I was one move away from checkmating my opponent, I deserve to win."

Just don't get worked up about that one single game. You might have lost that game anyway for so many reasons = a network issue on your part, or simply a blunder. Let's face it: we lose our games to blunders all the time, and we play hundreds or even thousands of games here.

The rating will take care of itself extremely fast. You will not go down in history as the guy who never became a 2800 player because of a server glitch. Instead the game will be forgotten by tomorrow, and the rating has fixed itself.
Yesterday I was in a classic game 60+30 withVendo_Bimbi when the site crashed. As it was my turn to move....I lost the game on tme. Could I please have my rating points back? Thanks. JurjenJacob
